'Atlas Shrugged' Producers Aghast Over DVD Cover's Story of 'Self-Sacrifice' Instead of Selfishness

The company behind the film Atlas Shrugged Part 1 is replacing 100,000 title sheets from the film's newly released DVD and Blue Ray versions because the copy writer incorrectly described the late Ayn Rand's 1957 novel, Atlas Shrugged, as a story of "self-sacrifice."

Put simply, that's like calling Michael Moore a tea partier.

Rand, who in 1964 published a collection of essays called the The Virtue of Selfishness, renounced self-sacrifice on principle. She famously argued that altruism must be rejected "if any civilization is to survive."

The book is fiction, by a before her time tea partier, for God sakes. Do the republicans not KNOW this?

yeah, it reminds me a lot of Scientology, taking a grade-C work of fiction and transforming it into scripture.

but then the Right has a long history of being unable to discern fact from fiction: they think Harry Potter novels are textbooks of witchcraft, while believing "Origin of Species" is nonsense.

She did believe in "our" self-sacrifice. I can't believe they are bothering to send it to DVD. No one went to see the movie!

Well, the book was horrible and the writer was a hypocrite, considering that she lived out her live on Social Security.

well, it's rather expected, not to mention relatively cheap, to put it out on DVD and reap whatever profit from it. what remains to be seen is whether they have the support to put out parts 2 and 3, or even shoot them and make them direct-to-video releases.

i imagine it'll be hard to find any "Shrugged" action figures in the toy stores/aisles, especially the John Galt figure. XD

and i'm sure living on Social Security is perfectly rationalized in keeping with their philosophy of "rational self-interest", i.e., it's available and it benefits me, so 'gimme gimme gimme!' (tho nobody else should get any, of course)

and again ..........

Ayn Rand: the original cougar and the writer for people who like to think that they're thinking.

They say that there are two books that can change a teenager's life, "The Lord of the Rings" and "Atlas shrugged".

-One is a childish fantasy with black-and-white morality, unbelievably perfect heroes and perfidious, ugly villains which leads to an unhealthy obsession and an emotionally stunted adult life.

-The other is about elves, hobbits, orcs and a magic ring.

I did read it at age 14, did a paper on it for my Republican civics teacher, got an "A". THen I went home and burned the book along with The Fountainhead. I've never done that, always donating books I don't like; but hers? What a waste of trees.

recycling would've been okay, at least. it is hard to willfully eliminate information, even dreck like from Rand or Limbaugh or Beck, etc. it's at least good to be familiar with what others are saying (and in those cases even use it against them, since they tend to not be aware of what they've claimed).

It was, let's see, 1960 - we didn't know much about recycling then, T'omm.

Right, T'omm. But for the most part I don't buy books I dislike anymore. B&N lets you sit on down and read a bit if you don't know the author.

True, sometimes the kid hands me a book and says, please read this, I want to discuss it. This happens in his English classes mostly, but since he just had his last English class, we will stick to things we both like now. (The last book that this happened with was last week: White Boy Shuffle by Paul Beatty - interesting, unreliable narrator, but a powerful look at why the protagonist was unreliable.)

And here in the South, we are looked at weirdly for wanting to recycle. I lived in Santa Monica, CA for 62 years of my life, had the blue can and the green can and always had a deposit on bottles, etc. Nothing like that here. I can't even find a place to recycle batteries!

It looks like we have a lot of work to do in the Bible belt.
